ERA at Burghley 2010
Reports
And so on to the cross country, Caroline Powell on Lenamore moved into the lead on a score 38.7 after an overnight second place with a faultless clear round that was well inside the time. Sadly that place was at the expense of Ruth Edge on Two Thyme who was having a sticky time of it until she finally had a stop at the second part of the water at fence 10 (see below); she was to jump two more fences before retiring.
Oli Townend on Carousel Quest continued his quest for the history books (back to back Burghley wins on the same horse) by moving up to second just 0.9 penalties behind the leader with a score of 39.6. William Fox-Pitt on Seacookie moved up one place to third with a score of 41.9 but Mary King achieved a rare feat rounding out the top five with Apache Sauce in 4th (44.8) and Kings Temptress in 5th (45.3).
Other notable advances up the field were Francis Whittington on Sir Percival IIII who screamed round the course and moved up from 13th overnight to 7th (48.3) going into the show jumping, Clea Phillips on Lead The Way who moved up from 18th to 9th (49.9) and German rider Anna Warnecke on Twinkle Bee who moved up from 20th to 10th.
And so with Clayton Fredricks on Be My Guest II (45.8) and William Fox-Pitt, on his second ride, Macchiato (46.8) completing the top ten in 6th and 8th places respectively, Sunday's show jumping looks very tight indeed; one or two fences could be pivotal in determining who will come out top as Burghley champion for 2010.
